Many items work very well as new. Some articles need some time to become functional. In our case, that it makes noise when we need it to synchronize a film. A bicycle bell works just as well when new as it did when it was used. A hinge or a piece of wood, however, must be treated so that it squeaks reliably when it is needed. Depending on the type of treatment and the article, it changes the appearance of an article. With one treatment one lets the utensil age in its functionality or in its behavior, but not its actual material condition. So the object remains something new.
